The primary 'product' of The Free House is to be a place for people to be with each other, even if you are on your own, but to pay the bills we offer other things. Beer, wine, cider, soft drinks, food and a few fine spirits.



All our beers are cask or keg dispensed and since opening 1000's of different beers have been served through the three beer engines and 13 bright taps. The beer menu is ever changing, offering the opportunity to try new beers, and beer styles, whilst also providing the familiarity of a few favourites. About 99.9% of the beers we serve are New Zealand brewed beers and we do tasting flights too. In late 2021 we launched Flavourtorium, our own brewery, to have some fun with and to join the  beers of NZ served at The Free House.


Nelson is a wine growing region and as such the wine list is predominantly local. Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Blanc de Noir, all lovingly made by Nelson growers and winemakers that are very clever, and nice people too. As the exception that proves the rule we also offer a delicious Italian Montepulciano d'Abruzzo. 



In Upper Moutere, 35 kms from The Free House is New Zealand's largest traditional cider apple orchard and cidery, Peckham's.

Real ciders made from 100% fresh juice, and made only in autumn with tree ripened fruit. At Peckham's they take their time, slow fermenting and ageing their ciders for at least six months. We always have a couple of them on tap because we think they are the very best.


By far and away our chips are the go to to go with your beer of choice. You have to be prepared to share though. Other options are listed on our blackboard menu at the bar. Or you can order from other local eateries and eat your food here. Some will even deliver to your table. Just ask at the bar.
